Is Spectrum Mobile worth it?

If you're willing to accept possible throttling and want to save money by combining Spectrum Mobile TM with your Spectrum Internet package, we believe it can be worth it.

Every Spectrum Mobile subscription includes features such as nationwide service, unlimited calls and texts, 4G LTE mobile data, 5G connectivity, and support for hotspot tethering. Additionally, you will receive no service contracts, free worldwide coverage, and mobile access to Spectrum's hotspot network.

Spectrum Mobile offers normal price and data allotments combined with competitive features. The Spectrum Unlimited plan appeals to us due to its affordable price and large data capacity, making it appropriate for both single people and small families.

Here is everything you need to know about Spectrum Mobile to save money by combining another Spectrum service with your Spectrum Internet package.

Spectrum Mobile Cell Phone Plans

Plan Monthly price Data allowance Overage speed limit Details
By The Gig $20.00/line per mo. for additional lines 1GB/line ($5/mo. per additional GB) 256 Kbps download/upload Call Now
Unlimited $30.00/line per mo. for additional lines 30GB/line 1 Mbps download/512 Kbps upload Call Now
Unlimited Plus $40.00/line per mo. for additional lines 50GB/line 1 Mbps download/512 Kbps upload Call Now

By The Gig is the name of Spectrum Mobile's entry-level cell phone plan. One line and one gigabyte of data are included with this plan. Every line on your plan will share the data, and if the 1GB baseline is insufficient for your family's needs, you may add more data for $5 per month for each extra GB.

By the Gig is a flexible cell phone package for people who only make calls or browse the internet occasionally. However, switching to one of Spectrum Mobile's other plans might be more appropriate if you expect to require more than 2GB to accommodate increased internet usage. For example, you would be better off purchasing an Unlimited plan with 30GB of data at By the Gig's 3GB.

Despite being named Unlimited, Spectrum Mobile's other two plans fall short of the name. In the same way that binge-watching Suits until 4:00 a.m. is "a TV night," they are "unlimited."

There is a 30GB cap on the Unlimited plan and a 50GB cap on the Unlimited Plus plan. After you surpass these caps, Spectrum will reduce your internet speeds to 1 Mbps for downloads and 512 Kbps for uploads, but you will still be able to use the internet.

Spectrum provides excellent internet and mobile bundles, which are essential if you want Spectrum Mobile because obtaining it requires having Spectrum Internet. One Spectrum Mobile Unlimited phone line is offered for a full year as part of an exclusive offer for certain Spectrum Internet subscribers.

What is the downside of Spectrum Mobile?

The main drawback of Spectrum Mobile is that the operator purposefully lowers your data rates when you use more data than you are allowed each month. Thankfully, the data allotments for each Spectrum Mobile plan vary, so by selecting a plan that suits your data requirements, you can prevent bandwidth limiting.

Spectrum Mobile will reduce its upload and download speeds to a pitiful 256 Kbps when a By the Gig line consumes more than 5GB of data. You will only be able to do simple web browsing on mobile data at these rates. The majority of carriers use speed throttling, and while we disagree with the practice, Spectrum Mobile's Unlimited plans do have better throttle speeds.

In the end, Spectrum Mobile's data caps are comparable to those of its rivals and adequate for a large number of users. Unless they stream films and download apps on their phones daily, most people won't consistently use more than 30GB of mobile data per month.

According to 71% of Spectrum consumers, their demands were successfully satisfied in recent contacts. (7th place overall)

Spectrum Mobile coverage and device availability mirrors Verizon

Spectrum Mobile uses Verizon's strong 4G LTE and 5G networks to provide wide coverage. Most of the continental United States, Hawaii, and even certain areas of Alaska are covered by service. However, you can check the Spectrum Mobile Coverage Map to have a closer look at coverage in your area.

Customers have two options for device flexibility in addition to network coverage. You have two options: purchase a new device or bring your own, a tactfully termed BYOD policy.

Bring your phone.

Before you may activate your new service, your device must be unlocked and running the most recent version of the operating system if you decide to bring your device. It may be necessary to free up space on your phone if you frequently put off system updates (we've been there!). Don't forget to back up anything vital.

Enter your device ID into Spectrum's BYOD eligibility tool to see if your device is compatible with Spectrum Mobile.

Buying a new phone through Spectrum

The newest, most popular phones, such as the Galaxy S22 Ultra and the iPhone 13 Pro Max, are available from Spectrum. If you want to relive the flip-phone era, you can even get a Galaxy Z Flip3 5G.

International calling and texting

It's easy to stay connected abroad with Spectrum Mobile. The service provides smooth international coverage for calling and messaging in more than 200 countries at affordable prices, whether you're in the US or overseas.

Customers with Unlimited plans also receive 2,000 minutes per line each month for calls to Canada and Mexico. You can text for free from the United States to any country, so you can feel secure no matter where your loved ones are.

Spectrum provides two international roaming tariffs for foreign travel: Global Day Pass and Global Pay-Per-Use. However, you might want to think about purchasing a prepaid foreign SIM card, depending on the length of your trip and its location.

Mobile hotspots

You can connect to a free Wi-Fi access point if you're not at home or if your monthly data limit is approaching. All clients have access to Spectrum Mobile's vast hotspot network.

Although there are some restrictions based on your data plan, it's a fantastic method to save cellular data. See our in-depth Spectrum Hotspots guide for additional information.

Optimized video streaming

Have you ever binge-watched nine seasons of a comedy on your phone only to be confronted with a punchline-like data bill?

It's a strangely particular situation. However, Spectrum Mobile automatically optimizes video quality to use less data when streaming over the cellular network, so you don't need to worry too much.

Customers of Spectrum Unlimited Plus can also use the My Spectrum App to customize their preferred video quality. However, the majority of iPhone and Android users can already accomplish it via the device settings.
